It is one of only 17 public, land-grant universities that is part of the Association of American Universities. UF sits on a 2,000-acre campus with more than 900 buildings (including 170 with classrooms and laboratories).
The past decades have seen UF’s research awards risen steadily to last year’s $574 million, placing UF among the nation’s leading grant-receiving institutions. More than $289 million of that total was for health-related research, from which a significant portion represents the state’s intellectual and economic commitment to biotechnology.
Researchers at the Institute on Aging, the McKnight Brain Institute, the UF Genetics Institute, the UF Health Shands Cancer Center, and the Emerging Pathogens Institute, on top of the six colleges of the Health Science Center—study everything from adult stem cells to gene therapy.
